About me

I am a college student (Columbia University Science Research Fellow ’27) and astrophotographer who is has a huge passion for astronomy and astrophysics research. In my spare time, I love to read science fiction, process Hubble archive data, and catch up on the latest research by reading papers.

I am one of the leaders of the Friendly Cosmos Astrophotograpy group. We aim to provide an encouraging space to discuss and learn about Astrophotograpy for beginners and professionals alike.

Research

I mainly research E+A galaxies as a part of the Y/Dim research group, headed by Dr. Charles Liu. I focus on bluer E+A galaxies in the Coma cluster. You can check out our group here: https://sites.google.com/view/ydim-collaboration/home?authuser=0

  • Ostling, W. et al. (2021, January. ) Eight Blue E+A galaxies located in a large-scale filament in the Coma Cluster.  Poster Presented at the 237th meeting of the American Astronomical Society. The virtual poster is available to see here.
  • “Eight Blue E+A Galaxy Candidates Located inside a Large-scale Filament in the Coma Cluster” Ostling, W. et al. IOP Science, RNAAS (Published 2021, March.) https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/2515-5172/abe7ee

  • Ostling, W. et al. (2022, January. ) Detailed Analysis of LEDA 126817 (RB199) – A ram pressure stripped, merging E+A galaxy located inside a galactic filament in the Coma Cluster.  Poster Presented at the 240th meeting of the American Astronomical Society. The virtual poster is available to see here.

  • Undergraduate Chambliss Award, AAS 240, https://aas.org/grants-and-prizes/chambliss-astronomy-achievement-student-awards

I have also done research on correlations between galaxies and redshift as a part of the NASA SEES internship.

  • “A Sample of SDSS Galaxies Used to Investigate Galaxy Evolution” (Presented August 2021) Charis Hall, William Ostling, Nidhi Shah, Nathan Streater. 150+ hours of research done with a mentor through the NASA SEES association. The poster is available to see here, and the presentation can be seen here.
